NOTE: This page was created in the late 1990's in response to requests by a number of Ambit's fans for free screensaver links. We have removed most of them.

The reason? In order to finance themselves, or simply out of greed, most of the free sites began to install software onto the computers that visited them without the computer owners' permissions. The owners of these sites gained a penny or nickel for each computer so "infected."

The word "infected" is now totally appropriate. By Fall, 2003, the number of sites and programs installed secretly on computers had become a plague that caused computers to slow down and crash. By Fall, 2004, the situation is so bad that most computer repair people are dealing almost solely with the problems from this "spyware", "adware", "popup-ware", "browser hijack-ware" and even worse "malware." EVERYONE is affected and infected.

And, at this writing, some of what is installed is done so by criminal elements around the world. There are programs that can dial your modem, placing calls halfway around the world that cost you hundreds of dollars on your phone bill - money put into criminals' pockets. There are programs which can log your every keystroke to a computer file. That file is sent to a computer for pickup where someone can see your usernames and passwords for online banking, your credit card for use making illegal purchases, and your social security number to steal your identity.

So, Ambit can no longer link to these free sites. Nor should you go to ANY sites which offer free screensavers, cursors, sounds, animations, wallpaper or free programs. You cannot tell if a site is safe until AFTER it installs hundreds of files onto your computer. This is not exaggerated. It is serious. It CAN hurt you. Be careful.
