Microsoft Internet Explorer - Some Explanations First
It comes built into your Windows computer. It works, and with every version it works better still. But there are some important things you need to know.

Below you will find links to downloading a number of different versions of Internet Explorer. The reason for this is that Microsoft has been removing features that are used widely on the Web. Why? Microsoft is substituting their technologies for the "open" technologies that everyone can use. The reason is obvious: to force companies and people to depend on and use products Microsoft owns. But as long as Web pages work, you probably don't care. The problem is that, as of this writing, all Web pages don't work the way the people who wrote them intended.

What to do? Well, your choices are:

Use what you have on your computer, if you feel it is working well
("If it ain't broke, don't fix it!")

Read the explanatory notes under each download below to decide IF an upgrade to that version is desirable

Download the latest version of Internet Explorer and "let the chips fall where they may."

Download and use Netscape's browser (below) as well - it is still based on "open" technologies and should work well with most pages and certainly with those pages that don't work with Internet Explorer.

No less than two out of three people use Internet Explorer (estimates run as high as 5 out of 6!) That makes it the current browser standard. As more time passes, more people that create Web pages will make sure that they work with Internet Explorer. but for now, there is information you need to know and you will find it in the notes under each version listed.
NOTES:
#1) This is the newest version of Internet Explorer, but, as of September, 2001, a Web page that uses Quicktime is not likely work with it. Quicktime is used on many Web site to view videos and movie trailers. Web designers must change the code in Web pages to help Quicktime to work. If you do not care, then read on.

#2) This version of Internet Explorer does not have JAVA support built into it. JAVA lets programs run within your browser. Many pages use JAVA, and JavaScript, in thier pages to make more things happen than just showing text and pictures. But, if your computer is not brand new (purchased with Windows XP) you have JAVA support on your computer already and this is not a concern.

#3) Lastly, Microsoft dropped support for Netscape-style plug-ins before this version of Internet Explorer. Companies have been, and are, changing how you play music, view videos (using programs other than Quicktime), view stock prices, etc., so you can still use their products with Internet Explorer. But you may find that some of what you cna od with an earlier version of Internet Explorer won't work with this new version. You should go to the company's Web site for the plug-in you use, and see what they say about all this.

Using America Online (AOL): AOL is a large program that connects you to AOL's computers which, in turn, can connect you through to the Internet. AOL's email program is part of the bigger AOL program. It has many features, but it is not the best email client you can use. If, however, you only use AOL for email, that is you only have an email address that ends with "@aol.com," it is the only email program that can receive email from you AOL account! The other programs listed below here will not help you at all, so don't waste your time. (NOTE: You can also use a Web browser to access you AOL email from the Web at aol.com, but that has fewer features than even the AOL email program!)

If you want to use something besides AOL, you need another email account. There are free accounts available from most of the major Web "portals": Hotmail, Yahoo, Excite, etc. But your AOL email program will NOT receive mail from another email account.

Because of AOl's limitations in this regard, some people dial into AOL and then minimize the AOL program, use a different browser and email program on the Web. The advantage is that there are more features in these programs than in AOL's progam. But a separte email program will not receive your AOL email. Then again, your AOL program is minimized and waiting to be used so it is available to getyour AOL email.

If this interests you, then the programs here might interest you as well.

Windows 98/NT/2000/XP: Microsoft has built email program into all these versions of Windows. It is called Outlook Express. It has many features and is always part of the installation of Internet Explorer. So if you install a new version of Internet Explorer, you are likely to be also installing a new version of Outlook Express.

Since this page is here to help, here are some links for Outlook Express information and more:

But you do not have to use Outlook Express. Other companies have been working at email before Microsoft got around to it. The Eudora and Pegasus programs, for example, don't cost anything to use and might be of interest to you.
