CU-SeeMe was originally developed at Cornell University in 1993. It was the first network video conferencing software. Versions of CU-SeeMe were freely available from Cornell for years. In December, 1998, White Pine Software obtained the full and inclusive rights to the product. Through subsequent mergers, the software is now owned by First Virtual Communications.
(Support for versions 1x, 2.x, 3.x, and 4.x is now handled exclusively by First Virtual Communications)

The latest version of CUSeeMe is now called "CU" and is part of the fee-based video chat service of CU World. This version of CUSeeMe is "tied" to that service.

However...

Version 5 of CUSeeMe, which is independent of any service, is still available for purchase at a number of Web sites:

Rocketcharged sells CUSeeMe and has a CUSeeMe Message Board

Shareware sites, like Tucows, have it available as a time-limited FREE download. You can also find CuSeeMe at other shareware sites.

This version of CUSeeMe allows you to view up to 12 people in a single virtual meeting, which can include video, audio, and text. You can also engage in one-on-one conversations, using ta person's IP address, or by using the Microsoft Messenger service, where you don't have to know the other person's IP address.
